【Editor's Note】

2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. In this war that concerned the survival of the nation, international friends from all over the world braved dangers and crossed the seas to join the cause of national liberation in various forms such as medical aid, war reporting, and technical support. The path of righteousness is not lonely. Dr. Bethune's scalpel, Snow's journalistic pen, and Rabe's safety zone are all life marks that transcend national borders. The international communication series "From Afar Came the Unforgotten" uses bilingual Chinese-English videos combined with AI animation technology to reproduce historical details and pay tribute to the light of belief that transcends national borders.

In the years of blood and fire during theChinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, a spark was kindled amid crisis, illuminating the rear—this spark was known as the “Gung Ho” movement, and one of its key torchbearers was a friend from New Zealand: Rewi Alley.

Tempered in the Flames of War, Forging the Backbone of Industry

On April 21, 1927, Rewi Alley arrived in China for the first time, disembarking at Shanghai's Shiliupu Pier from the cargo ship "Kalulu" via Hong Kong.

In 1935, Alley and several friends launched China's first English-language journal to champion student voices and the cause of national liberation—Voice of China—helping to broadcast the Chinese people's struggle against Japanese imperialism.

After the outbreak of the August 13th Incident in 1937, Japanese artillery fire relentlessly bombed Hongkou and Yangshupu in Shanghai, destroying factories and leaving vast numbers of refugees and unemployed workers displaced. The following year, Rewi Alley resigned from his position at the Shanghai Municipal Council and went to Wuhan to launch the vigorous Gung Ho movement.

The Gung Ho movement—advocated and initiated by Alley together with Edgar Snow and his wife, among others—aimed to organize unemployed workers and refugees in non-occupied areas into industrial cooperatives, producing for national salvation, meeting both military and civilian needs, and sustaining the War of Resistance.

In April 1938, the first Committee for the Promotion of Industrial Cooperatives was established in Shanghai.

Thereafter Alley devoted himself entirely to the movement. By 1940, Gung Ho cooperatives had spread across sixteen provinces, numbering more than 1,780, with a monthly output worth over 24 million yuan, aiding more than 200,000 unemployed workers and refugees, and forging an industrial backbone for the war effort.

Founding Schools to Cultivate Talent for China's Dawn

Rewi Alley's vision extended beyond wartime production; he deeply understood that talent was the foundation of national rejuvenation. In 1941, he established the first Bailie School in Shuangshipu, Fengxian County, Shaanxi Province—the first of its kind in China's northwest. The name "Bailie" carried the meaning of "cultivating talent for China's dawn."

However, as Japanese forces advanced westward and amid the political climate of the time, the school's operations in Shuangshipu were disrupted, making relocation imperative.

In the summer of 1943, while returning from an inspection tour of the Yumen Oilfield, Rewi Alley discovered that Shandan County had coal, grain, and exceptionally hardworking people. He and then-principal George Hogg decided to move the school west to Shandan.

Alley referred to this 1,100-kilometer westward relocation as a "little Long March." They traveled in a "wool truck," carrying their bedding rolls and four large jars of pickled chili beans, trudging through biting winds until they finally reached Shandan.

They began their new life in the abandoned Fata Temple and a few rented rooms. "The doors and windows of the temple had been torn off and used for firewood, the pillars were gnawed and scarred by hungry horses… the whole place was in ruins." Their classrooms were "windblown from all sides."

In Shandan, the school primarily enrolled students from impoverished families. Pupils attended classes for half the day and engaged in labor the other half, adhering to the motto: "Combine Hands and Mind, Innovate and Analyze." Within just a few years, the school had established over 20 practical training workshops—including papermaking, printing, machinery, chemical engineering, textiles, glassmaking, and leatherworking—as well as a hospital. These productive activities spurred local economic development and emancipated minds among the people.

The Torch Lives On, A Lifetime Guarding China's Dawn

Bailie School, born in the flames of the War of Resistance, explored a new form of education that combined work with study and integrated practice with theory. It cultivated a large number of technical and managerial key personnel for New China's production lines and embodied the dedication of much of Rewi Alley's life.

Rewi Alley lived and worked in China for 60 years, devoting his entire life to the country.

On December 27, 1987, he passed away due to illness. Before his death, he asked his adopted son to scatter half of his ashes over Siba Beach in Shandan, where he had worked and lived, and to bury the other half in the Rewi Alley and George Hogg Memorial Park beside the Shandan River.

In his will, he wrote:"Please do not make a fuss—it is only another soldier passing by on the march." On the table beside his sickbed lay the unfinished manuscript of a book introducing China.

If Norman Bethune's scalpel healed the bodies of soldiers on the front lines, and Edgar Snow's pen recorded the cries of an unyielding nation, then Rewi Alley's "wrench" tightened the screws that sustained China's industrial lifeline in the war's rear.

Together, they stood with the Chinese people in the War of Resistanceagainst Japanese Aggression. Their names and stories are not only recorded in history—they are forever cherished in our hearts.
